What is Advocacy Anyway?

The word “advocacy” is defined as: the act or process of advocating
or supporting a cause or proposal. We often recognize it in the form of
public policy – elected officials advocating for a change, lobbyists
bending the ears of legislators, etc. Advocacy is often born out of a
need for something. A need for awareness, resources, or a cure. We
advocate for people: those who cannot speak for themselves, for loved
ones no longer with us, and for people less fortunate than ourselves.
Advocacy
and policy often seems like it’s a job for government officials, but
guess what? You’re already in the business of advocacy. You advocate
for yourself or your loved one every day. You’re on the phone with the
treatment team trying to adjust medications or you are calling the
insurance company demanding that they cover a particular treatment. In
fact, you are already an expert at advocacy. Why not take it to the
next level?
Next month is Brain Tumor Awareness month. People
all around the country are holding events big and small trying to spread
the word about brain tumors – they are holding fundraisers,
informational groups, and wearing gray ribbons or wristbands. During
this month, there is a particular week that is set aside for action.
Brain Tumor Action week happens May 1, 2011 - May 7, 2011. On May 3rd,
brain tumor patients, family members, friends, health professionals, and
other advocates will storm Washington, DC and lobby their elected
members of Congress and inform them about the needs of brain tumor
patients and families. They will lobby to protect funding for brain
tumor research and share their stories.
This week we will be highlighting ways that you can take action.
What are your plans for Brain Tumor Action Week?
