Pet Therapy Week
Posted by: Jill at NBTS on March 14, 2011 at 11:18AM UEDT

This week we will be taking a closer look at pet therapy. If you currently have, or have had, a pet then you know how much comfort and joy they can bring to your life. It could be meeting you at the front door after a long day or waking you up in the morning for a walk or a breakfast reminder.

Recently, there was an article published online about canine assistants and how they can help in many ways. The Doctor's Dog Will See You Now - Therapists Use 'Canine Assistants' to Comfort, Cheer Patients; Duke Senses an Anxiety Disorder.

Later this week, some of the NBTS staff will share photos of their furry-friends on this blog. You won’t want to miss it!

Do you have a pet or a four-legged companion in your life? Post a comment or share a story here.

An apricot-colored toy poodle came to our door in spring, 1993, less than three years after my craniotomy. She had brought us so much joy - I really couldn't imagine how our life would have turned out without 'Puppydog'.

Everybody loved her - she's the only animal my In-laws allowed into their home. My late Mother-in-law was the one who had made the name 'Puppydog' click. Little kids in the neighborhood would knock on our door asking if they could play with 'Puppy'.

She passed away peacefully two years ago.

Father-in-law started buying feed for the cats that wondered into the yard of his rural home when he noticed how much Mother-in-law loved petting them. She had been displaying cognitive decline for a couple of years by then and was put in a nursing home several years later. Father-in-law still buys feeds for those cats. I think those cats have helped his grieving over Mother-in-law's passing.

A hospital volunteer asked me if I wanted a visitor in my hospital room after the craniotomy. I forget what kind of dog it was; it was huge, very gentle, and had fur soft as human hair. What a wonderful therapy!

I agree, animals of all shapes and sizes can provide so much comfort and joy in times of stress or uncertainty. My kitty means the world to me and she never lets me forget that life is short and you shouldn't take yourself too seriously. Thanks so much for sharing everyone!
