One of the earliest memories I have of a pet is at age four. I managed to uncover a very large toad behind the bushes in my friend’s backyard. Barely fitting in my hands, I snuck “Mr. Toad” (yes, original) into my family’s car that evening. On the trip home Mr. Toad sang loudly and I tried my best to mask his sounds by creating my own strange noises. My dad pulled over the car and with enough questioning, I reluctantly revealed my newfound pet. I begged my parents to let me keep Mr. Toad. They bargained to help find him a happy home near our house. Mr. Toad stayed in the bushes near our home for years -- at least I imagined based on the noisiness of the bush. He was the start to many pets in my life as well as many lessons about how to care for what I loved.
On that note, from doggy doors to fish bowls, the staff of NBTS opened our camera lenses to share our pets with you! We've put together a slideshow of our furry (and not-so-furry) friends. If you hold your mouse over the photos, you can read each staff member's comments.
