Music and MRIs
Posted by: BeccaJ at NBTS on April 1, 2011 at 12:32PM UEDT

One of my favorite ways to relax is to just put on some great music and follow the sounds. Some songs have such powerful effects that they instantly transform my mood.

Listening to music can help calm the mind and ease stress that may occur before or after an MRI scan. In some cases, you can listen to music during your procedure. However, it’s recommended that you call ahead of time and ask if you can bring music to your appointment.

In closing this week’s topic on MRI-related anxiety, I’ve included a playlist of some of my favorite “feel good” songs. I hope you’ll enjoy it and get inspired to make your own playlist. If you are new to the world of online music discovery, the following article may be helpful in creating create your own perfect playlist:

I really like your playlist, Rebecca:) Love, love, love "Do You Realize?" - who'd think that a song about death could be so strangely uplifting? - and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" - simple, pure, beautiful!

I was spoiled early on by an MRI tech who really believed in the calming power of music. He mostly had oldies on hand and I usually went with his Motown collection; can't beat Motown:) But for my more recent MRI's, the techs seem to think it's crazy to listen to music, after all, "you can't hear anything over the noise anyway". But you can and it's really reassuring to hear old favorites. I guess I'll have to find out that one tech's name and schedule future MRI's accordingly:)

I must have some really good techs. They ask me what I would like for music or video during the MRI. I also listen to music in the car on the way to to Hospital.

I had one of my CDs playing and the tech for my gamma knife came out with a nice big smile, It appears music benefits everyone involved,

I watched a segment of Planet Earth from the Discovery channel for my last MRI.
