This week we will be discussing the topic of brain injury and brain tumors. Did you know that no two injuries are alike? The degree of damage and side effects depend on several factors including the amount of injury sustained and the location of the impact.
An estimated 1.7 million people experience a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the United States each year. The most common forms of TBI include blows to the head, car accidents, falls, and sports-related injuries. Additionally, non-traumatic brain injuries affect an estimated 795,000 Americans a year.
Brain tumors are considered one form of non-traumatic or acquired brain injury (ABI). The tumor can grow into spaces of the brain, and the resulting pressure can damage brain tissue. Surgical procedures to remove the tumor may also contribute to brain injury.
