August 18 2011 I took my Mom to the emergancy room after a week of her falling asleep all the time and having blurred double vision. They did many tests on my Mom and after bringing her to the ICU they told me she has a brain tumor on the lower right side of her brain. My Mom has been in the hospital since then and has a biopsey and several CT scans and MRI's. They told us it was lymphoma and they needed to agressivly treat her with steroids and chemo. In the past week my Mom refuses to see any family and thinks my Dad is going to kill her. She yells at family and friends for calling her or trying to see her and acts like we did something wrong or she doesn't know us. She has since then removed me and my brother from being her power of attorney and now the nurses will not give us any information. My Mom doesn't even know who she is anymore and I can't believe they are going to listen to her. I feel like my Mom is slowing dying and I'm only 22 and I still need her and know one will help me. Please help!! Also I forgot to mention she has had to be put on a pacemaker and have a port in her chest for chemo.

Awhile back we told you about our plans to launch a new and improved discussion forum section. We are happy to report that the new discussion area is almost here! The switch to the new discussion forum will take place on Monday August 8th. Please note that the forums will be temporarily unavailable on August 8th while we transfer content from the old system to the new system during that down time. You will be able to read all previous posts in the forum area during the short down period, but will not be able to post any new topics. We hope to make the transition as smooth as possible and appreciate your patience during the upgrade. We look forward to hearing your feedback about the new system when it’s up and running. Please feel free to call the Patient Services Line at 800.934.2873 or email us at info@braintumor.org with any questions.

Dear Community,

We have scheduled an upgrade to our current forums for Monday, August 8th, 2011. On this date all topics and replies posted in the forums will be moved to a new upgraded format. When you navigate to the My.BrainTumorCommunity forum page you will land on a different looking page than you are used to starting Monday, August 8th. We believe the new format will be easier to use and we will have a number of features available to you that are not available in this current version. To help you learn the new format we will set up a question and answer discussion in the new format titled, "Welcome to Discussions: Q & A." It will be located at the top of the page. Feel free to post any questions you have or review FAQs others are asking.

Additionally, you can also feel free to contact our Patient Services team at 800.934.2873 or at info@braintumor.org. Please note that your post history will be maintained with this upgrade. Your post count will not change and all your old topics and replies will be accessible in the new format.

We thank you for being a member of our interactive online community!

Sincerely,

Greetings
I am constantly searching for new treatments for Malignant Gliomas.
My wife has Anaplastic Astrocytoma.
I was recently surfing the web and ran accross this chemical called Dicholoracetate (aka DCA). If you google it you will get all the info.
Apparently, a doctor in Alberta, Canada has published some initial results that are promising.
So I thought I would come to the forums and see if any of you have tried this or know anything about it.
If you want to contact me directly- thomas.beaver@yahoo.com
Thanking you in advance for any info.

This may not be new to others, but this is the first I had heard of it. Now it's being tested on Glioblastoma, but if it works, it seems like it could work with other types of tumor as well. I know my tumor was only partially resected because it was too difficult to differentiate tumor from healthy tissue. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/05/10/earlyshow/health/main6470978.shtml?tag=cbsnewsTwoColUpperPromoArea

NeuroOncology Branch - NIH Bethesda MD

My husband 61 y.o. was diagnosed with GBM in 10/2009. In my reading about GBM, I found several presentations by Dr Howard Fine in NeuroOncology Branch (NOB) at NIH in Betheda MD. I also found via www.clinicaltrials.gov by searching for Glioblastoma and Bethesda, that although most clincial trials there were for reoccurence, there was at least one for newly diagnosed. It is thru the Radiation Oncology dept at NIH, and adds Valproic Acid (Depakote, thought to sensitize brain tumor cells to radiation) to standard radiation therapy and Temodar. I called and within a week, we had our initial visit in the Brain Tumor clinic at NOB. He will participate in another study that allows him to get all MRIs at NIH (free) and have regular visits with a neuro-oncologist. Still see a medical oncologist in the community who prescribes and follows for the Temodar. The Radiation Therapy was done at NIH and they also supplied the Valproic Acid, Zofran and Senekot and all lab work (all free) during the 6 weeks. That treatment was finished on Jan 12. He is also in another study for Radiation Oncology where they are looking at blood and urine in hopes of being able to find markers that might indicate early reoccurence.

This past week, had MRI and followup appts at NIH. MRI shows brain swelling has continued to decrease, no new tumors and the site where the tumor was removed has decreased in size.

For anyone who is not local to Bethesda (over 60 miles) - the first trip to NIH is at your expense, but after that most travel and living expenses while at NIH is fully paid!
